Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our existing group of doctors. You will be expected to be involved fully on our rolling on-call rota based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and and will have equal access to training opportunities in clinics, theatres and wards. Post-holders will need to be enthusiastic to learn and be involved in all aspects of the departments work. You will be expected to proactively contribute to the department's research activities which are regionally renowned. The department will support all attempts to be involved or initiate research projects to completion and publication
Main duties of the job
Provisional Timetable (generic)
The day to day working pattern is on a 5-week schedule. It incorporates covering the cardiac ICU and the surgical unit, clinics and operating sessions.
On call
Each registrar will be on call on a 1:5 rota. On call is for a 24-hour period. The rota is non-resident. Immediate care is provided by a team of Advanced Care practitioners (ACPs).
Theatre lists
Each registrar will usually have 3-4 operating days per week.
Outpatient Clinics
Outpatient clinics are usually covered by the SPR allocated to that consultant.
Formal teaching
All trainees are encouraged to participate in weekly educational meetings/journal club. The teaching program is organised by the allocated trainee.
Supervision
All trainees are allocated a clinical supervisor (CS).
Each trainee is required to produce a personal development plan annually, which should be discussed with their CS and as a result agreed targets and objectives set.
Meetings with the CS should be undertaken on a six-monthly basis and a formal report signed by the trainee and supervisor to be submitted to the Surgical lead. In addition, for each block the trainee should meet with the consultant for whom they are working to discuss the objectives for the forthcoming period.
Local Faculty Group
There is a robust process in place to assess the progress of trainees. A Local Faculty Group has been established which meets biannually. All registrars are expected to participate.

Each trainee is allocated responsibility for a specific role key to the running of a safe, efficient unit. Developing these skills is intrinsic to surgical training.
This is for a defined period (6 months 1 year) and allocated at consultant level. It is expected that trainees will rotate through a number of these posts.
These roles include the following:
MDT meetings (including with regional centres)
Management of the Acute Board
Rota administration
Pre-operative care
Data entry / note keeping/ recording of complications.
Post-operative infection (root cause analysis for each deep wound infection)
