Main duties of the job

This exciting role will look beyond the traditional boundaries of our outstanding rated Trust into Warwickshire North Place, the wider Coventry and Warwickshire system and liaising closely with the other Managing Directors in our Group of Trusts.

This role requires a creative and inspirational leader; someone who will champion the Trust and Warwickshire North Place with partners, shaping and influencing strategy that plays to the strengths of the Trust and supports the delivery of system health.

We want a values-driven people person, someone with energy and enthusiasm, who is open, authentic and compassionate.

Job responsibilities

To be a kind, compassionate and inclusive leader who can inspire and empower teams to be the best they can and deliver the best possible care to patients. This includes playing a fundamental role in creating an excellent colleague experience at George Eliot Hospital so that we EXCEL at patient care.

Work very closely with the Chief Executive Officer providing day to day leadership of the Executive Leadership Team, and with them playing a key role in setting the strategy for the Trust and its daily operations.

Provide strategic and operational direction and leadership in the planning, management and delivery of the Trusts strategic and operational objectives.

Contribute to the development and management of the overall corporate agenda, supporting the Chief Executive while taking direct lead on relevant Trust, Group and Warwickshire North Place priorities.

Take a lead role in managing the risks, challenges and opportunities facing the Trust with well-developed horizon scanning functions

Play a key part in the development of the Foundation Group and in the transition towards creating an Accountable Care Organisation in Warwickshire North.

Ensure that there is constant and visible Trust wide leadership to support the Executive team to ensure delivery of its performance, financial and governance requirements.

OPERATING CONTEXT

South Warwickshire University Foundation Trust, Wye Valley NHS Trust and George Eliot NHS Trusts have established a Foundation Group through the creation of a Committee in Common (the Group Strategy Committee). The purpose of the Group is to support the ongoing sustainability the Trusts and to facilitate the rapid development of integrated care in their localities.

The Managing Director will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible with other Chief Officers for achievement of performance, quality and financial standards and for the provision of high standards of regulatory activity and patient safety.

The Managing Director will be a member of the Board of Directors and the Group Strategy Committee and ensure that there is constant and visible Trust wide leadership to direct and lead the Executive team to ensure delivery of its performance, financial and governance requirements.

Providing effective leadership, acting as a role model for our people and ensuring the development of a culture and core values which enable George Eliot NHS Trust to continuously improve and innovate.

Establishing and maintaining good internal and external stakeholder relations.

Leadership and Strategy Implementation
  • To support the Chief Executive and be responsible with the Chief Officers and through them to manage all the Trusts resources, ensuring the Trust complies with the requirements of regulators and meets its obligation in contracts with commissioners
  • To support the Chief Executive in development of a cohesive leadership team through the Chief Officers and together develop clear work plans for assurance and improvement within the Trust
  • Provide leadership to develop a fully engaged workforce and an accountable, delivery focussed culture
  • To support the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer in the development and engagement of clinicians in leadership
  • To progress the development of integrated care through close collaboration with partner organisations and communities
  • To play an active role in the development of the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System

Performance and Governance
  • To ensure systems are in place to monitor the performance of the Trust against business targets and plans and against standards for accreditation by external bodies such as the Care Quality Commission
  • To ensure that there is an effective system of governance and performance management in place within the Trust to monitor how the site effectively uses its resources
  • Ensuring effective corporate management of resources, (people, organisation, structures and management systems), regularly reviewing and re-prioritising these to ensure effective utilisation
  • To identify and minimise key risks to the achievement of the Trusts objectives and ensure service continuity is maintained in the event of major disruption to normal service delivery
  • Represent the Trust at a local level including ICS, Local Authority, and other appropriate meetings
  • Ensure the Trust delivers quality, operational, financial and workforce performance against agreed plans and with the Chief Executive hold the relevant Executive Directors to account for the delivery of their plans and objectives
  • Nurture opportunities which improve service delivery and performance to the highest level possible thus contributing to the overall success of the Trust and local health and care system
  • With the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer and other Trust senior leaders seek opportunities to challenge and improve practice in all areas including clinical quality, patient experience and operational effectiveness and put remedial actions in place to ensure and evidence improvement and demonstrate that quality and safety are of the utmost priority in the daily operation of the hospital site.

  • To participate in the relevant Trust on call rota and provide leadership, advice and guidance.

  • Demonstrable track record of sound financial and operational management in a Board level position
  • Demonstrable track record of leadership, strategic management at Board level
  • Demonstrable track record of operational performance improvement with proven ability of leading and embedding service improvement and/or transformational change
  • Building effective, productive and relevant working relationships, both internally and externally, with a diverse range of senior stakeholders including a political environment.
  • Sound knowledge of problem solving and improvement methodologies
  • Ability to influence, negotiate and persuade regarding complex or sensitive issues
  • Ability to operate effectively in clinical, academic, and operational environments with multiple stakeholders

Experience

Essential

  • Significant senior management experience in an NHS Acute Trust operating at Board level or Organisation with comparable scope, responsibilities, budget and resources
  • Proven successful leadership and management of large multi-disciplined teams: establishing key performance indicators and raising performance levels developing critical capabilities; leading through organisational changes-effectively dealing with uncertainty and areas of conflict to ensure current and future success
  • Experience of increasing staff engagement and motivation to improve performance
  • Experience of leading service and / or transformational change
  • Experience of managing complex problems
