We have an ambition to increase diversity at board level and would welcome applications from individuals from under-represented groups

UHB is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a local, regional, national, and international population. We employ around 22,000 colleagues. We see and treat more than 2.2 million patients every year across our four hospital sites - Good Hope, Heartlands, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Solihull Hospital - and through our community services and clinics. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns & plastics, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a Major Trauma Centre treating the most severely injured casualties from across the region. The hospital's single site critical care unit is the largest in Europe. The Trust hosts the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM), and is the lead organisation for two Health Data Research UK Hubs as well as the NHS lead for five National Institute for Health Research Centres. UHB is proud to host the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) providing dedicated training for defence personnel, which is also a focus for research and innovation

Main duties of the job

UHB has experienced challenging times, and with a refreshed Board focused on driving culture change and embedding the values of the Trust, the Board has determined the Trust requires a new devolved operating model to achieve our organisational vision & purpose. This is so our population receive a consistently equitable experience and level of care, our sites and community services can realise benefits of scale, and to ensure strategic alignment with the ICS and strategic partners. This will benefit our 22,000 workforce with a sense of belonging to the hospital rather than the Trust supporting local strategy to attract and retain staff to hospital sites giving more autonomy to our experts to make decisions about their service and moving away from centralised control

Underpinning our ability to transform will be the appointment of a CSDO. A pivotal leadership role & voting member of the Board reporting to the Group Chief Exec, will play a critical role in leading ongoing transformation & strategic development of the organisation

The CSDO will provide expert advice and support to define strategic direction for the Group, ensuring alignment with wider system priorities, is at the forefront of the digital landscape enabling Group staff to deliver quality care. You will bring a proven track record of developing strategy and leading transformation across a complex, multi-stakeholder organisation.
