The principal general surgical departments have benefitted from the Trust's substantial capital investment and enjoy modern accommodation and state-of-the-art equipment. Staff are enthusiastic, friendly and motivated and work effectively as a team.

The Department

The General Surgical Service at Northumbria comprises colorectal, benign upper GI and breast teams. We provide all colorectal services (with the exception of exenteration), treating colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor conditions. Upper GI services include bariatrics, hiatal surgery and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. The breast team provide a full range of treatments for breast disease including reconstruction and mammoplastic services.

Acute and emergency surgery comprises a major part of our workload and we ranked 4th in the country in terms of numbers of laparotomies performed in the most recent NELA report.

About us

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate.
