An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to support the Cancer Services Directorate in developing and maintaining reporting tools and dashboards in line with national cancer standards, extracting data using SQL from the Somerset Cancer Registry.

The successful candidate will need to have a strong attention to detail, be organised, work flexibly and problem solve.

Use of data extraction and management tools such as SQL, Power BI, etc. will be an essential requirement of the post.

Main duties of the job

Key duties:

To be an expert in cancer data collection by keeping up to date with dataset and definition changes.

Develop and maintain a range of dashboards, using products such as Excel, Power BI, SharePoint.

Keep up to date with system developments and best practice, particularly the Somerset Cancer Register.

Develop SQL skills to support reports utilising the SCR underlying data structure.

Ensure current and new data collection/system changes are made in accordance with the most up to date data standards guidance on content and deadlines.

Work with the Cancer Data team, Alliance colleagues, operational and clinical teams to ensure reporting requirements are specified.

About us

The Cancer Services Directorate is based on the two main hospital sites of Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The directorate includes a number of roles across the staff groups of medical, technical, nursing, and administrative working together to deliver an effective and efficient cancer service.

Job responsibilities

In a typical year the trust will receive over 20,000 suspected cancer referrals, diagnose 3000 new cancers, and deliver 3500 treatments for cancer. The BI Analyst will be responsible for collection, validation and screening of information used to support the development of reporting within Cancer Services & Oncology. They will provide expert analysis of information sources to produce high quality management information for service users with particular focus on support to the delivery of the Long-Term Plan, cancer recovery and restoration.

  • Graduate level qualification in information management / statistical analysis or proven experience

  • Use of data extraction and management tools e.g., SQL, Power BI, Excel
  • Managing patient data and interpreting clinical terms
  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques and procedures
  • Experience of using and extracting information from different systems
  • Experience/knowledge of issues of working with confidential information
  • NHS or other health sector experience
  • Experience of working in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and challenging deadlines
