We are looking for a Medical Retina fellow to join us for an initial one year fixed term appointment. This is a full time post with a minimum of 10 programmed activities. The post will be based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading and the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor. The appointee will be expected to become a full member of a progressive and forward looking department involved actively in Clinical Governance and Quality improvement projects. Continuing education, professional development and teaching are actively encouraged and research and audit opportunities will be available.

Main duties of the job

Medical retina clinics and cataract surgery will form part of the timetable and the Fellow will also be expected to contribute to General Ophthalmic, Casualty and Acute Primary care Services. They will be part of the team covering inpatients and on-call work.

The appointee would be required to undertake annual appraisal and contribute towards their professional development plan. The exact details of the job plan will be agreed on appointment and will depend upon the area of expertise of the successful applicant and requirements of the department.

About us

The department undertakes approximately 7000 day-case procedures pa and provides approximately 100,000 outpatient attendances and over 20,000 Eye Casualty attendances pa, serving a population of approximately 1 million.

At the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading the service is located in the Eye Block and includes the Eye Outpatient Department and the dedicated Eye Day Case Unit.

The Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor is on the site of the King Edward VII Hospital. There are two fully commissioned ophthalmic theatres within the unit undertaking day case admissions and minor operations.

Ophthalmic Accident and Emergency services are provided in both the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Prince Charles Eye Unit, adjacent to the clinics. The Orthoptic departments and departmental secretarial services are located close by.

The West Berkshire Community Hospital in Newbury provides dedicated eye outpatient clinic facilities and theatres.

The outpatient facilities at all sites include modern reception and waiting room areas and individual fully equipped consulting rooms. Up to date equipment includes OCT, HRT, photography, ultrasound, YAG and argon lasers (including SLT), Pentacam scanning and IOLMaster biometry.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital is a Digital Trust using Cerner Millennium EPR. The Ophthalmology department is paperlight, using Medisoft for all clinical records. Medisoft is closely integrated with EPR.

Job responsibilities

  • Competency in assessment and management of both routine and complicated medical retina patients
  • Competency in retinal lasers including PRP, focal/grid and micro pulse
  • Gain understanding of the evidence-base of medical retina management
  • Competency in management of acute and general ophthalmology
  • Competency in cataract surgery

  • Person Specification



    • Full GMC registration/eligible for registration MBBS
    • FRCOphth Part I
    • 5 years at Specialist Registrar level or equivalent, in posts recognised for training by the appropriate Surgical Royal College
    • Experience of Medical Retina clinics.


    • MSC or equivalent
    • FRCOphth (full)
    • Certificate of eligibility for entry into higher specialist training (CEEHST), Royal College of Ophthalmologists (for UK applicants).



    • Experience in PRP, focal/grid and retinopexy argon laser


    • Computer skills - experience with Medisoft EPR
