Regional Anaesthesia/Simulation/Peri-operative/POCUS FellowshipAnaesthetics to start in August 2023

Harrogate District Hospital is a District Hospital situated in the Victorian Spa Town of Harrogate in the pleasant rural county of North Yorkshire. Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Anaesthetics starting in August 2021 for a fixed term 12-month post. The Anaesthetic Department is able to provide fellowships in the following areas:
  • Regional Anaesthesia
  • Simulation
  • Peri-operative Medicine
  • Point of Care Ultrasound

Fellowships available at any given time vary and applicants are encouraged to stipulate which fellowship they would be interested in.

Main duties of the job

  • Work to deliver a high-quality critical care service and contribute to critical care outreach sessions.
  • Provide a comprehensive anaesthetic service for elective lists. The fellowship will focus on elective lists with an emphasis on regional anaesthesia to further develop ultrasound skills
  • Work as part of a team in order to support and help to provide a comprehensive critical care and anaesthetic service within the Trust.
  • Carry out patient administration as outlined in Trust Policies
  • Ensure accurate documentation is undertaken for all patient records in line with Royal College of Anaesthetists, GMC guidelines and Trust Protocols including discharge summaries.
  • Participate in the hours of work monitoring.
  • Clinical Fellows are expected to be flexible in their working arrangements.
  • Develop advanced skills in areas of perioperative medicine already existing in Harrogate. Sessions will include: high risk preoperative assessment clinic, preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and post-operative anaesthetic rounds of high risk post-operative surgical patients.
  • Develop advanced skills in providing anaesthesia and running theatre lists for patients on the enhanced recovery pathway in colorectal, orthopaedic and gynaecological surgery
  • Fellows will be actively involved in audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Fellows will be actively involved in delivering teaching, training and simulated learning.
  • To facilitate the development and delivery of the perioperative service.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a young and enthusiastic anaesthetic department that has full ACSA accreditation and an ICU recently rated as outstanding by the CQC. You will work a 1 in 8 full shift rota with prospective cover for annual and study leave. As well as working in theatres and intensive care, the position also allows time for the active development and running of a variety of quality improvement projects and participation in research projects. Time will be provided to support research and quality improvement work. Presentation of work at regional and national meetings is encouraged and previous fellows have been able to gain publications and international presentation experience. Successful candidates are encouraged to meet early with their supervisors to develop an appropriate personal development plan and a bespoke timetable to enable them to gain the most out of these post.
