Job summary
SAU is based at Mapother House, on the Maudsley Hospital Site. It is an open adolescent inpatient unit, offering mental health care for adolescents (12-17 years) with serious mental illness who present in crisis and require hospital admission. The unit has 11 inpatient beds and up to 3-day patient places.
This post involves direct assessment of all admissions, formulation of treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), liaison with other agencies (both health and partner organisations), supervision of junior medical staff, chairing of meetings with both clinical and non-clinical agenda, and facilitating safe and effective discharge in collaboration with community services.
Although currently based at Mapother House, this is an exciting time for the service, as SAU is due to move to a new purpose built home in the new Pears Centre, a new development providing inpatient and outpatients mental health services for children and young people, based on the Maudsley site. This is due to happen in 2023 and the post holder will be instrumental in the further development of SAU in its new home. This post has become available because of the career progression of the previous incumbent.
Main duties of the job
To support delivery of an effective and efficient specialist adolescent psychiatry inpatient service, in accordance with national guidance and in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Snowsfields Adolescent Unit (SAU) is one of four CAMHS units run by The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM), alongside Acorn Lodge Children's Unit, the Bethlem Adolescent Unit and the Bethlem Adolescent PICU, all of which are based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.
SAU has a multidisciplinary team (MDT) comprising nursing, social work, occupational therapy, art psychotherapy, psychology and education. The medical staff consists of a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, one Specialist Trainee 4-6 and one Core Trainee 1-3. There is secretarial and administrative support.
