Job summary

An exciting Consultant Sonographer opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and highly motivated experienced Sonographer to join the Radiology imaging team at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board NHS Trust. The post will be based at the University Hospital of Wales and support the Ultrasound services at both the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough.

The post holder will be required to provide a high level of Ultrasound clinical service to patients and be a multiskilled sonographer with expert skills in Obstetrics, to include Fetal Medicine type work, General Abdominal and Gynaecology together with an additional specialist skill within another area of Ultrasound.

The ability to work autonomously and experience of independent reporting is essential in this role and also be able to manage in a fast- paced environment while maintaining the ability to produce high quality images along with succinct and accurate reporting.

The post holder will have responsibility for alignment of national and local strategy, clinical leadership in the management of Ultrasound, with responsibility for policy and service development

In addition to the successful candidate having a degree in Radiographythey will be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), educated to MSC level in postgraduate Ultrasound qualification, havethe relevant clinical and leadership experience and experience in a broad range of sonography competencies.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as an autonomous practitioner as part of a clinical team in the Radiology department, playing a leading role jointly supporting the Imaging Service with Consultant Radiologists within UHB, providing a highly advanced specialised level opinion and advice.
  • To undertake sonography and a range of specialised examinations to a high standard within the Imaging Department, providing professional support for Radiology and other staff and contribute towards the development plans to improve patient care within current professional, national and local policies.
  • Be a member of the Imaging Multidisciplinary Team and to be responsible for providing technical direction, motivation and leadership in the provision of a high-quality diagnostic Imaging Service ensuring patients undergoing examinations receive a high standard of care. Undertake Research and Development and educational activities.
  • The job plan will be flexible and will include sessions involving clinical work, scanning and administration.
  • In a typical week, a regular attendance at some MDTs will be required.
  • The job requires extensive experience and expert practice as a sonographer in a wide range of U/S examinations including within specialist fields such as Fetal Medicine.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Qualifications -DCR / BSc Radiography qualifications. HPC registration. DMU / Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent. 5 years' minimum experience as an Advanced Practitioner. MSc or equivalent level of study Evidence of Managerial Development
  • Experience -Comprehensive specialist knowledge of current trends in diagnostic ultrasound and other imaging modalities. The ability to expertly assess and evaluate diagnostic ultrasound images to formulate an independent report.
