An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Substance Misuse Nurse to join the Healthcare team at HMP Leicester

Working within the Team at HMP Leicester will give you the opportunity to make a real difference to a group of people who traditionally have high psychiatric and social morbidity but have also faced multiple barriers to accessing appropriate healthcare.

This role is for registered nurses, with NMC registration, with experience working in Substance Misuse Services, who wish to pursue a career within Offender Health

You should be enthusiastic, motivated, patient focused and enjoy a challenge.

This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of �2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period. This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust. This post also includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during night, weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

Working with men from arrival in the prison through to their release back into the community , You will be responsible for the day to day organisation and smooth running of the multi-disciplinary team, providing a service to a diverse caseload of patients who are presenting with mental health problems and a high risk of harm.

Job responsibilities

HMP Leicester

HMP Leicester is located in the city centre, it is a Category B Local Remand Prison that houses approximately 350 men over the age of 18.

The population is made up of remand, unsentenced and short sentenced residents. The Prison has one large wing, a separate smaller wing for Vulnerable Prisoners. There is a dedicated healthcare centre located in the main building with other rooms across the establishment where healthcare appointments can be carried out. The prison is always busy with a high turnover of men so each day is busy / exciting and at times challenging.



Offender Health Directorate

The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK.

The Directorate provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands.

Providing healthcare to several Prisons, for a population of over 10 000. You would be part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals, with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development.

You will be involved in providing integrated clinical support in the care of patients with ongoing, acute/chronic health and substance misuse conditions. The role is pivotal in leading and co-ordinating a high quality, safe, effective and efficient service to meet the needs of the patient population across the prison establishment

To demonstrate innovative practice, whilst collaboratively working with multiple stakeholders, maintaining clinical efficacy, enabling the service to compete as provider of choice to local commissioners.

Delivering a wide range of positive health opportunities to individuals in custody, which is equal to and often above what is offered in the community.

We work as part of a wide MDT, including GPs, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, RMNs, Pharmacists, Substance Misuse Recovery workers, RGNs, Sexual Health Specialists and other Allied Professionals and have strong links with community services to promote continuity of care.

We have well-established and strong relationships with the prison team, who support us to deliver healthcare safely.

You will need to have a Good Knowledge of safeguarding, of safe therapeutic approaches used in secure environments including the Recovery Agenda

As a senior nurse your will also be responsible for supporting and supervising junior staff, to engage in individual and group supervision and reflective practice.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse


Desirable

  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (or willingness to attend)
  • Certificate/Diploma in Counselling


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of providing nursing services in a recovery focused way
  • Experience of working with patients on a 1:1 basis and building good patient relations
  • Experience of working effectively within a wide multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of close working relationships with a variety of statutory agencies and other external organisations


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a criminal justice setting
  • Experience of carrying out PADs and supervision


Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of current drug issues
  • Understanding of relevant Local and National Strategy


Desirable

  • Awareness of other issues relevant to healthcare within criminal justice
