Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, hard working and enthusiastic Respiratory Physiologist to join our busy, well-equipped department
You must be proficient in a comprehensive range of procedures including spirometry, full lung function testing, reversibility studies, methacholine challenge testing, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, blood gas analysis, bronchial challenge,sleep and ventilation services.
The successful candidate will be required to help supervise, teach and train junior Clinical Physiologists and to work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
You should ideally hold a BSc in Clinical Physiology and have relevant years experience working in a Respiratory Function department. It is essential that you have passed the ARTP (parts 1) professional examination and are eligible for RCCP registration.
Main duties of the job
To competently and safely perform the tests with the authority not to proceed if findings suggest the test is inappropriate or likely to be detrimental to the patient.
To be able to advise more junior staff on the procedures when required.
To plan and prioritise own duties, clinics and training activities to maximise service benefit.
To exercise a responsibility for personal and departmental day to day organisation and delivery of a quality assured respiratory function service.
To participate with clinical supervision and training for junior staff in the above procedures.
To be responsible for discussing any findings of concern with the referring clinician or Chief Physiologist.
. To lead on procedures which carry a recognised clinical risk
. To clean equipment post procedure, to a high standard, in order to minimise infection risk.
To have a detailed understanding of Health and Safety procedures to ensure own, staff under supervision and patient safety / wellbeing.
To utilise IT skills relevant to equipment databases, Internet, email and the patient administration systems.
To demonstrate effective communication with all levels of staff and patients (internal and external to the hospital) in order to maintain an efficient service.
To accurately log all activity performed, in order to provide accurate statistics to be used in the future planning and organisation of the Clinical Physiology Services.

Job responsibilities
The candidate will be proficient in performing and interpreting all respiratory investigations performed within the department. These include;
Full pulmonary function tests with administration of bronchodilator therapy where indicated
Assess airways hyper-reactivity and respiratory tract inflammation
Supervise, perform and interpret medically unsupervised Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Tests (CPETs), on both congenital cardiac and respiratory patients with assessment of exercise-induced airways obstruction if indicated
To be able to perform independently procedures to assess for exercise related respiratory disorders in high level athletes
Field exercise testing
Simulate and assess patients oxygen requirements during a flight and advise the patient and clinician their results and requirements.
To perform research based investigations complying with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Other speciality services
Interpret and perform complex sleep investigations, for clinicians on the patients condition and advise appropriate therapy
To be able to initiate, review and adjust treatment for patients with sleep-related disorders for both Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
They will be able to perform blood gas analysis to assess for patients respiratory status and titration of oxygen or NIV requirements
Able to perform Head Up Tilt Table Testing (HUTT).
Able to perform unsupervised Autonomic Function Testing (AFT).
Able to perform and supervise Exercise Autonomic Function Testing (ExAFT).
To be competent in interpreting, reporting and diagnosing during the above procedures.
You may be required to work in other designated locations of the Trust as well as your primary base. In particular, flexibility is required across the three main hospital sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital)and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs).
If your initial location is one of these sites excess travel reimbursement would not apply for a permanent or temporary change of base.
