Job summary

Bostonian is a Haematology and Oncology Ward comprising of 18 side rooms. We care for acutely unwell patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy regimes, complications post chemotherapy - for example:- neutropenic sepsis, spinal cord compressions, hypercalcaemia, SVCO, immunotherapy related toxicities, symptom management and end of life care. We also triage chemotherapy patients over the telephone and accept direct admissions to the ward.

The team are very caring, friendly and compassionate. We aim to provide an exceptionally high standard of nursing care with a passion for learning and development. We have 4 Deputy Ward Managers and a Clinical Educator to help support the role of the Ward Manager. The Deputy Ward Manager will need to act as a role model and provide leadership for the team, including managing change and supporting innovation to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

Main duties of the job

The role involves working as an autonomous practitioner and will include working on a fast paced admission unit providing holistic palliative care to end of life patients as well as managing the conditions and side effects associated with cancer, curative and palliative chemotherapy and radiotherapy including neutropenic sepsis, superior vena cava obstruction, spinal cord compression, pain management and hypercalcemia as well as the administration of immunoglobulins and all blood products.

As a Deputy Ward Manager you will be expected to be able to deliver excellent patient care autonomously and as part of a team. You will be required to competently co-ordinate shifts ensuring that appropriate care is delivered and safety of patients, staff and visitors in maintained. You will take responsibility for your own team of staff ensuring that their well-being and developmental needs are being met. You will be encouraged to learn and develop both your leadership and management skills through our progression pathways.

We are a supportive team offering continual progression to develop, including support with revalidation, learning bays, supervision sessions and daily team huddles. We also prioritise team building including time-out days, pay-day meals and team building days.

Person Specification



  • oRegistered Nurse Level 1
  • oENB 237 or equivalent
  • oEvidence of recent study


  • oDegree
  • oENB 931 or ENB 285
  • oENB 998 or equivalent



  • oExtended competencies in cannulation, venepuncture, management of central venous lines and administration of chemotherapy
  • oExcellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • oAble to demonstrate a flexible approach to the provision of holistic, clinically effective care
  • oEvidence of assessing and supervising junior staff


  • oIT skills
  • oDemonstrate an ability to motivate and encourage staff
  • oExperience of undertaking research/audit projects

Previous Experience


  • oExtensive post registration experience and recent experience of working in a oncology/haematology radiotherapy setting


  • oExperience of attending Medical Exposure Committee Meetings
