An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Specialist/Highly Specialist Physiotherapist with proven clinical skills and a passion for caring for people with acute and chronic respiratory conditions to join the respiratory physiotherapy team at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals. This team lead role will be contributing to care across both in- and out-patient settings, including the emergency care and general medical pathways, medical HDU, Physiotherapy led general out-patient and Consultant led severe asthma clinics. The postholder will be a key member of our multi-disciplinary teams delivering high quality, inclusive therapy for local residents and those from the wider South-East England region.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dynamic, skilled clinician and leader who will provide clinical assessment, treatment and management of patients with highly complex presentations. As a B7 service lead, they will be committed to training , supervising and supporting the career development of their junior colleagues and students with flexibility and compassion. They will demonstrate drive and enthusiasm to work creatively to contribute to service improvement initiatives through project work, with our patients, staff and partners.

The postholder will have had experience at a senior level and evidence of an interest in developing further in this speciality. They will have the opportunity to develop their clinical and leadership skills, supported by a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, Deputy and Clinical Lead and Consultant Physiotherapist and as a wider member of the B7/8 Respiratory Leads Team.

The respiratory physiotherapy service has a high profile within the Trust and currently provides a 7-day service, reflecting the physiotherapy department's commitment to meeting patient needs and delivering excellence. It is essential the post holder be able to contribute fully to on call out of hours services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of stable and acutely ill patients, with acute and chronic respiratory problems, with multi-pathology including those who have highly complex presentations, to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated and to maintain associated records, as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To take a lead role in supervision, training and development of physiotherapists / physiotherapy support workers / students and MDT staff in the physiotherapeutic care of patients with respiratory problems.
  • To provide skilled team and service leadership and be responsible for operational management, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in own clinical area, and to set and monitor standards of practice.
  • To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and to lead in departmental audit, quality improvement and research in their clinical area.


Person Specification

Knowledge/ Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma / Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Post Graduate Courses relevant to the clinical speciality
  • Registration HCPC
  • Continued Professional Development including evidence of reflective practice


Desirable

  • Recognised post-graduate qualification e.g. MSc. in Respiratory Care
  • Post graduate course(s) in management and / or leadership training
  • Membership of relevant National SIG e.g. ACPRC / BTS / ICS


Skills

Essential

  • Advanced knowledge and skills of a wide range of approaches to the holistic management of complex medical patients, including those with respiratory presentations and chronic respiratory disease in both acute and out-patients settings, demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary setting, goal planning, developing care pathways and using outcome measures
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and the implications for physiotherapy services including experience of quality issues and audit
  • Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner
  • Supervision of other staff e.g. Band 5 staff physiotherapy assistant / Technical Instructor students


Desirable

  • Knowledge of current national policies / standards / initiatives in acute medicine and chronic respiratory disease
  • Advanced IT skills e.g. Excel spreadsheet functions and word document editing and report writing


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience at Band 6 level in a broad range of settings including critical care, surgery, medicine, respiratory out-patients and rehabilitation
  • Specialist experience in the management of complex acute respiratory patients including those with tracheostomies as well as invasive and non-invasive ventilation
  • Specialist experience in the physiotherapy management of chronic respiratory disease and conditions, including airway clearance, breathlessness and disordered breathing.
  • Experience of teaching in a clinical setting including physiotherapists and the wider MDT


Desirable

  • Experience of research practice and methodology
  • Previous experience at Band 7 within a respiratory setting
