Job summary

Specialist Dietitian - Paediatrics

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and keen dietitian to join the paediatric team at Southend Hospital.

You will join the other paediatric dietitians in the nutritional care of children with a whole range of different conditions including food allergies, faltering growth, artificial nutrition support, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, autism and ARFID

You will work closely with the paediatric consultants as well as clinical nurse specialists, Speech and Language Therapists and other members of the wider MDT

Main duties of the job

You will join our team of 20 dietitians and 3 secretaries at Southend Hospital to provide a dietetic service for children. Your role will include:
  • Cover to the Children's ward at Southend Hospital, the Neonatal Unit, and dietitian-led outpatient clinics.
  • Provision of dietetic care to children on home enteral nutrition
  • You will work closely with other members of the wider MDT to provide a dietetic service to children with a wide range of different conditions
  • Attendance at MDT meetings.
  • responsible for promoting dietetics and the role of the dietitian in paediatrics.

Job responsibilities

Southend Hospital is a busy teaching hospital within the wider Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group. The Trust is very supportive of CPD, and training opportunities are available both within and outside the Trust.

  • To work as part of the integrated team of therapists across a range of specialities.
  • Perform specialist dietetic assessments of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to develop and deliver an individualised treatment plan, whilst maintaining accurate patient records
  • As an autonomous practitioner, have responsibility for own work and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type.
  • Supervise, educate and assess the performance of dietetic students; this would be to a graduate standard and involve working with universities to ensure the standard of practise and teaching meets the standards set by the degree level qualification.
  • Undertake evidence-based audit and research projects and make recommendations to clinical lead/manager of service for changes to practice by the team.

The department takes students from the University of Hertfordshire on their second and third year placements and you will have a part to play in their training.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified Dietitian
  • HCPC registration


Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant post-graduate training


Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • at least 18 months post-graduate experience
  • Experience in Paediatrics
  • Experience in IBD and coeliac disease
  • Experience in food allergies


Desirable

  • Previous NHS experience
  • Experience in Autism & ARFID
  • Previous participation in research and audit


Leadership skills

Essential

  • experience in supervising students


Desirable

  • Experience in supervising band 5 dietitians and / or dietetic assistants
