The post holder will be responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive moving and handling service provision to all staff groups, with a large focus on patient and staff safety for the implementation and maintenance of the newly revised and updated Moving and Handling Policy providing expert advice around moving and handling practices following up any such enquiries.

The post holder will have experience in moving and handling training with a relevant healthcare qualification, thorough knowledge of clinical moving and handling practices in an acute and community setting is highly essential however applicants lacking health care qualifications but possess relevant experience of service provision in a healthcare environment would be considered.

Main duties of the job

Good communication, interpersonal as well as teaching and training skills are essential for this post.

The post holder will be expected to support unit managers, both clinical and non-clinical, providing support to moving and handling adviser and working across the Trust by giving advice and guidance on moving and handling practices and procedures at a local level.

Close working with clinical staff is essential to ensure the provision of education and training aligns with best practice, national guidelines and moving and handling legislation. Involvement in strategic clinical developments and relevant meetings are also key requirements of this role and the team more broadly.

Job responsibilities

TRAINING

To be accountable for the provision of Moving and handling training to all employees of the Trust, including its contractors where required.

To assist in developing and deliver programmes which aim to prevent back injuries and musculoskeletal disorders arising from work-related activity and undertake regular evaluation of educational activities and report on results.

To participate in providing specialist moving and handling and other relevant training, including bariatric patient handling, paediatric handling health education and induction programmes as required.

To ensure that accurate and detailed records of training are maintained in accordance with health and safety legislation.

To monitor the stats and ensure that the moving and handling e-learning programme is used effectively.

To work in conjunction with the manual handling lead on the designing setting and delivery and review of all moving and handling training provision, ensure quality and relevance.

LEADERSHIP

To provide relevant information to ensure the ELD database is kept up-to-date and accurate particularly regarding attendance.

To partake in the audit process and assist in ensuring that all aspects of moving and handling are monitored effectively.

To monitor the provision and use of moving and handling equipment throughout the Trust, including trials of new equipment and techniques as appropriate.

To analyse and interpret basic moving and handling incident and audit data and contribute the implementation of safe systems of work.

To contribute to and provide regular reports as part of the overall moving and handling report.

To support the implementation of procedures and policies relation relating to moving and handling, to meet the requirements for CQC, and Health and Safety Legislation.

To advise the Trust in partnership with Occupational Health and Risk Management departments on all aspects of moving and handling and relevant up-to-date legislation and requirements.

To follow an ergonomic approach to the assessment of risk of musculo-skeletal injuries paying attention to inter-relationship and characteristics of loads the environment, individuals and the organisation.

To attend relevant committees including the Health and Safety and falls group and any others groups requiring moving and handling presence.

To keep up-to-date with current research and development relating to Moving and Handling and advise the Trust accordingly.

To promote good relationships within and external to the Trust

To establish good personal and professional relationships with all departments.

To produce written recommendations as appropriate on the need for purchase of equipment.

To act as a resource and provide advice and support to all staff.

To contribute to the development of the ELD strategy with particular emphasis on Moving and handling.

To maintain own professional development to ensure all training is up to date and relevant.

CLINICAL

To undertake environmental visits and risk assessments to ensure effective use and provision of equipment.

To support those Trust Employees who work out in the Community or on other premises.

To work alongside staff in clinical areas demonstrating and supervising best practice.

To identify those staff at risk in conjunction with relevant managers and clinical staff, including support of managers when undertaking investigations of adverse incidents related to moving and handling issues.

To assist managers in performing risk assessments as required on general and specific moving and handling activities and to produce recommendations on control measures as required.

To liaise with all departments, managers and supervisors to advise on all aspects of moving and handling.

To assist in the development of a referral and assessment process for employees who have health problems relating to musculo-skeletal and back problems so competent advice can be given to managers regarding fitness to return to work.
