NWAS currently provides both telephone and face to face maternity care within a geographical footprint that extends 5 counties with reach into a richly diverse regional population, (by a range of ambulance staff including paramedics, and non-registered ambulance staff), with the capability to include the NHS 111 service within its portfolio.

The reach of the service covers 23 acute maternity sites (Obstetric Units), 7 Stand Alone birth centres (Midwifery Led Units without doctor's present), one community midwifery service and all homebirth services.

We are looking for an experienced midwife and/or paramedic to lead on maternity and new-born quality standards and governance within NWAS, reporting to the Trusts Consultant Midwife. The maternity quality and governance practitioner in conjunction with the trust consultant midwife will review, define and set quality standards for the maternity and new-born population who access care via the NWAS (including urgent and emergency care). In addition, the role with support clinical leads with internal maternal and new-born investigations aligned to the PSIRF framework and liaise collaboratively with external organizations and the independent investigations branch, HSIB.

Main duties of the job

This successful candidate will also work collaboratively with the consultant midwife and chief nurse in developing a trust-wide strategy for midwifery and new-born care delivery, setting standards and guidelines for maternity and midwifery practice, in keeping with NMC, JRCALC, national policy documents and guidance. Key professional links for the quality and governance practitioner include the Consultant Midwife, Chief Nurse, Medical Director, Assistant Director of Workforce and OD, Director of Operations, and the Quality Innovations and Improvement Directorate.

The role has the key leadership function to ensure the professional development of pre-hospital maternity care, and clinical leadership through the practice function within the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), NHS 111 sites, and patient-facing with staff (either in an Ambulance or in a Fast Response Vehicle (FRU).

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
