The adult Speech and Language Therapy Department are looking to recruit two full time, permanent, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (band 6) to provide assessment, intervention and rehabilitation to patients in a range of acute and community settings based within Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. We are currently undergoing organisational change to extend our service to cover weekends on the Hyper-Acute stroke unit at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, and these posts may be part of this process.

Main duties of the job

These posts offer an exciting opportunity to develop your skills with a mixed adult caseload based in settings in North Tyneside and Northumberland. You will have the opportunity to work within a supportive SLT team, and gain experience working with a wide range of clients, including acute and community clients and those with voice and upper airways conditions.

About us

The post holders will be supported by highly specialist clinicians to develop clinical competencies in the areas of complex dysphagia, video-fluoroscopy, endoscopy and stroke rehabilitation. The successful candidates will be supported to develop other skills such as leadership, clinical supervision and education, and will be provided with structured support and supervision. The post holders will be part of a large team of passionate therapists working collectively towards challenging annual objectives and offering a robust focus on CPD. The post holders will be involved in teaching and mentoring of ward staff, MDT colleagues, junior SLTs and students and will work closely within the MDT to enable seamless patient centred care.

Job responsibilities

The post holders will be working in Speech and Language Therapy settings in North Tyneside, Hexham and Morpeth. There are opportunities to work on inpatient wards as well as providing outpatient clinics, home visits and group therapy. There will be the opportunity to develop skills in stroke rehabilitation within the Early Supported Discharge Team. The successful candidates will be involved in planning safe discharge for patients and liaising with community agencies, and will be supported by senior SLT colleagues and the wider MDT.

There will be potential to provide outpatient care for people with voice and/or upper airways disorders. We envisage that the post holders will attend regular VFSS and FEES clinics to develop skills in these areas.

The successful candidates will need to be able to meet the travel requirements of the post as there is the requirement to offer home visits.

Essential Criteria:
  • recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree qualification or equivalent.
  • Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to the management of acquired swallowing and communication conditions.
