Due to new investment, this is an exciting opportunity to work across ENT and Maxillofacial services at WWL. You will be an expert practitioner in the field of Head and Neck - ENT/Voice, leading a highly specialist service. You will work closely with our ENT Consultant colleagues, clinical nurse specialists and SLT peers across all aspects of the patient's pathway in Surgery, Oncology and Voice. This investment was secured reflecting WWL's recognition of the advanced skill set required and commitment to optimal patient care.

We are looking for an SLT with advanced clinical expertise working in adult SLT across acute and community settings, a significant amount should be in the management of Head & Neck, ENT and OMFS populations including Head and Neck cancer, laryngectomy, complex surgical voice restoration (SVR) and Voice. You will be responsible for the coordination and management of the SVR service. You will take the lead on pathway development, staff development, training, and clinical activity/performance.

We have an established fortnightly video fluoroscopy clinic and with support from ENT Consultant colleagues and SLT peers conduct FEES as required. You will participate in the weekly MDT Head and Neck Clinics and in the joint ENT/ SLT Voice Clinics.

You will be joining a friendly supportive team developing SLT pathways for surgical and oncology patients under WWL. This will include close working with SLT's across Greater Manchester.

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, develop and implement specialist speech and language therapy treatment for H& N, Voice, benign ENT/OMFS and airway disorders. This will include assessment, diagnosis and management of complex communication and swallowing problems in the H& N/ENT/OMFS population involving the use of, and interpretation of e.g.: videofluroscopy and FEES
  • Comprehensive management of both communication, voice, stoma care and swallowing in laryngectomy patients
  • To lead as the Clinical Specialist SLT on pathway development, staff development , training, and clinical activity/performance.
  • Responsible for the coordination and management of the surgical voice restoration (SVR) service.
  • To coordinate and participate in the weekly MDT H& N meeting/Clinics and in the joint ENT/SLT voice clinics
  • To manage complex voice diagnoses arising from e.g. psychogenic, respiratory, airway and trans clients
  • To provide day-to-day operational leadership to the SLT Head & Neck / ENT Voice service
  • To work as an expert independent practitioner responsible for own caseload and assist the lead of service in the delivery of an efficient, effective, and quality SLT service.
  • To advise on strategic service developments in the SLT service across the Trust

Duties and Responsibilities
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of their professional and clinical work, working to agreed local, national and professional standards.
  • To undertake comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies using diagnostic and analytical skills to identify their problems and needs and ensure that patients medical, psychological, social environmental and cultural factors are taken into account.
  • To perform endoscopy to assess and manage patients within SLT-led clinics, joint ENT/SLT clinics and laryngeal augmentation surgeries.
  • Using advanced and up-to-date clinical reasoning skills and assessment techniques: - identify the problem/diagnose and formulate individualised management and treatment plans in negotiation with the patient to devise and deliver a specialised evidence-based programme of care utilising a range of treatment options. Relate findings to presenting pathology.
  • To be a source of clinical expertise within SLT providing advice (including second opinions) to the trust and other organisations as required.
  • To use a diverse range of communication strategies to ensure effective communication with patients who may have difficulties e.g. cognitive impairment, mental health problems, severe acute illness, newly diagnosed with a progressive terminal illness, that may create a barrier to communication
  • To facilitate safe and timely patient discharge from the service and to audit outcomes of speech and language therapy management
  • To plan and prioritise own highly specialised workload and support other staff to organise their caseload.
  • To oversee and monitor referrals, caseload and timely discharge of patients from the SLT caseload.
  • To ensure timely referral to other services/professionals as appropriate.
  • To advise the lead of service of clinical priorities within the specialist area(s).
  • To access clinical advice and support from peers within and outside of the organisation, consultant therapists, professional lead as appropriate as part of training and continuing professional development.
  • To communicate complex condition-related information to clients, carers, members of the multidisciplinary team and other professions and agencies as appropriate.
  • To provide advice at an advanced level to patients, carers and to other health and social care professionals, and other organisations.
  • To develop and evaluate SLT care plans within a specialist field against a diverse range of outcome measures and adjust care plans to facilitate achievement of goals.
  • To lead on development and implementation of evidence-based clinical protocols and pathways of care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  • To be competent in treating patients on an individual basis as well as in a group / class setting if required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Member of Health Professions Council
  • Completion of range of advanced courses in specialist field
  • Member of local/national specialist groups / clinical excellence


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience working with adults with a range of disorders.
