Job summary

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust has an exciting opportunity to recruit a Band 7 Clinical Team Lead Physiotherapist to assume joint clinical and operational leadership of the Medicine Physiotherapy Team at St Richard's Hospital. This role would suit a practitioner with highly developed leadership and people skills who are able to balance the day-to-day operational running and governance of a past paced, multi-faceted team with a clear vision for the future development of the service and staff. Candidates should be skilled in the assessment and treatment of complex, acutely unwell patients as well as the long-term management of those with long term and complex conditions. We are a research active Physiotherapy service with strong links to the Trust Research and Innovation Committee and local HEI's. We are continuing to develop local clinical research activity and will support staff to develop clinical academic careers. Main duties of the job

  • Undertake a joint team leader role in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Physiotherapy Service provided to medical patients in acute, rehabilitation and out-patient environments throughout the trust.
  • To take a leading role in the advanced assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients. These patients may have complex and/or chronic presentations.
  • To provide an effective high-quality service to all patients and take a lead role in supervision and teaching of Physiotherapists / students / technicians / assistants in that speciality.
  • To take a lead role in the on-going education and training of other members of the Medicine Physiotherapy team, the wider health care team and Physiotherapy students in the Physiotherapy management of medical conditions in acute and rehabilitation environments.
  • To provide skilled team and service development leadership.
  • To implement policy and policy changes in own clinical area and to assist with the setting and monitoring of standards of practice.
  • To plan and anticipate changing service demands within current resources in conjunction with Head of Physiotherapy - St Richard's.
  • To undertake evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and to lead in appropriate departmental research in this clinical area.

Job responsibilities

  • To be able to lead, motivate and persuade others (including staff and patients) through advanced communication skills, with the benefit of verbal and non-verbal skills, using written and electronic information where needed.
  • To use communication skills of persuasion, motivation, reassurance and explanation to encourage patients to undertake their treatment programme and ensure understanding of their condition. To adapt communication style and techniques to suit children of a range of ages from neonatal to late adolescence including those with complex and communication needs.
  • To overcome barriers to communication such as age, learning/ developmental or understanding difficulties, visual or hearing impairments, extreme fear or language barriers.
  • To communicate effectively with parents and carers to maximise Rehabilitation potential for patients, this includes those with communication and understanding difficulties.
  • To work collaboratively and maintain close links, communication and liaison between all staff and people involved in patient care, student education, research or policy development as appropriate and promote good working relationships at all times.
  • To assess capacity to give consent, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment such as patients who have learning difficulties or who are acutely confused.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma/degree in Physiotherapy
  • State registration (HCPC)


Desirable

  • Master's degree in related subject


Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of operational team management
  • Experience of ability to manage resources/ change priorities to respond to service demands
  • Experience of facilitating education of students and co-ordinating placements


Desirable

  • Experience and knowledge of representing service to external agencies


Knowledge, Training & Experience - Clinical

Essential

  • Previous Band 6 experience in core in-patient areas
  • On-call competent
  • Band 6 experience in Acute Medicine / Respiratory with a good knowledge of managing complex Medical conditions in acute and rehabilitation environments
  • Experience of line management of staff and students, including appraisals, supervision and training


Analytical & Judgmental

Essential

  • Use of advanced clinical reasoning and knowledge/experience incorporating a wide range of approaches to treatment and management of complex acute Medicine conditions


Human Resources

Desirable

  • Experience of performance management
