Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and empathetic Band 6 Senior Staff Nurses to join our team who have a passion for the specialty.

We are particularly interested in talking to Nurses who currently work in a Sexual Health setting or who have relevant experience within this field. 56 Dean Street including Dean Street Express provides full sexual health care to over 600 patients per day and therefore we are looking for applicants who are driven, efficient and able to work at a fast pace whilst maintain amazing customer service and professionalism. Dean Street is well respected and trusted by our patients and we are keen to work with Nurses who share our commitment to the care we provide. This Senior post includes seeing symptomatic patients autonomously and taking the role of Nurse in Charge in the clinical setting. We would expect the Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse to also take on link nurse roles within the Clinics and to support junior members of staff where necessary acting as a role model to all members of the Multi-disciplinary Team.

Please note, as a Band 6 is a Senior role, candidates will need to have previous GUM experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a high quality, expert, individualised management for patients seeking sexual health care (including contraception and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment).

They will be a senior member of the Nursing Team required to rotate to the Nurse in Charge role. They will be responsible for the support and training of junior staff and required to deputise for the Band 7 team when required.

The post holder is required to have up to date knowledge of all contraceptive methods and sexually transmitted infections provided by the Trust and will contribute to the development of policy or service changes. Whilst the post holder will be working with and supported by a large senior and experienced team, the Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse should be a competent and proficient independent sexual health practitioner.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To assess individual patient needs and requirements without supervision, in accordance with Trust and Directorate guidelines.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate relevant programmes of care for individual patients within Directorate guidelines.
  • To be competent in the following, with appropriate training:- Venepuncture- The taking of male and female genital swabs- Microscopy and the making of provisional STI diagnoses- All current forms of HPV treatment- Point of care testing- Nurse Management of Patients who are HIV positive- Asymptomatic & symptomatic screening- Cervical cytology
  • To facilitate effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure appropriate nursing input into patient care discussions.
  • To undertake clinical audit and research within the Directorate.
  • To be competent to supply and administer medications under a Patient Group Direction Support and management of people taking post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV.
  • To maintain clear and accurate documentation in line with Directorate and Trust standards. To be aware and work within all Directorate and Trust Policies and Guidelines.
  • To have an understanding of counselling skills, including pre and post HIV antibody test discussion.
  • To be conversant with colposcopy policy and procedures.
  • To order investigations and provide test results to patients as per Directorate protocol.
  • Triage and minor illness support and management of GUM & HIV positive patients.
  • To provide an asymptomatic / symptomatic screening service within the clinic.
  • Support and management of HIV patients with co-morbidities and co-infections In conjunction with the lead nurse to develop and coordinate targeted sexual health services.
  • To be involved in developing protocols and policies for services within the Directorate.
  • To participate in the development and updating of Patient Group Directions within the Directorate 1.19 assess and support patients experiencing problems with adherence with HIV medication and provide treatment support as in Option E & START Clinics.
  • Management and support of clinically stable HIV positive patients on or off therapy.
  • Advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, with particular reference to smoking cessation, diet, immunisation and sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
