Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to job share as lead Speech & Language Therapist for the Newcastle Integrated Community Stroke Team on a temporary basis while the substantive post holder takes a part time role in a quality improvement project. We need someone with extensive experience in providing communication and swallowing services to adults with acquired stroke in a community setting, who has an understanding of the whole stroke pathway and multidisciplinary team work. Preferably we would like someone with established skills in communication impairment. We need a skilled team player who has proven competence in a community environment. We are looking for confidence in supervising Rehab Assistants.

Job responsibilities

• To be the Lead Speech and Language Therapist for the Community Stroke Team.
• To be the highly specialist SLT in community stroke rehabilitation.
• To contribute to planning and evaluation of the Community Stroke Team with the Team Lead and other AHP Lead staff.

Qualifications

Essential

• Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
• Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
• Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses - MSc equivalent
• Dysphagia training to intermediate level

Desirable

• MSc in relevant advanced clinical practice

Experience and knowledge

Essential

• Substantial experience working with patients with stroke disorders in a community setting
• Substantial experience working with elderly people
• Multidisciplinary team experience
• Experience in supervising more junior SLTs
• Experience in teaching other professionals
• Experience in supervising students
• Experience of audit

Desirable

• Research experience

Skills and abilities

Essential

• Well established procedures of managing complex acquired communication disorders
• Dysphagia skills at intermediate level
• Established skills in assessing appropriateness of communication aids and on-going development and implementation of high and low technical alternative communication devises
• Excellent clinical supervision skills
• Excellent communication
• Excellent teaching and presentation skills
• Excellent computer skills
• Excellent auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
• Full UK Driving Licence
