Job summary
Infection prevention and control (IPC) is an integral part of patient safety and a diverse and challenging area of practice. There is now an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic and innovative Registered Practitioner to join our IPC Team. The team is based at Derriford hospital but also covers a wide range of community services and these roles will involve rotation across the whole IPC service and participation in the on-call rota for Infection Prevention and Control.
As well as a passion for infection prevention, you will need to bring to the role many skills such as clinical leadership, change management and excellent oral and written communication skills as you will be required to deal with a wide range of staff within and external to the Trust. The role will be varied
You will be supported and encouraged to undertake any necessary training but a good working knowledge of infection prevention and control is essential and an interest in teaching and audit
Hours: 37. 5 hours preferred but for the right candidate a minimum of 30 hours per week. The ability to be flexible to cover needs of the service is essential.

Main duties of the job
The Infection Prevention and Control team is a busy team which provides a varied and supportive environment to work within. The team are pro-active in their approach to all aspects of the role and actively seeks ideas from team members to contribute to improving the service. Clinical supervision, educational opportunities and an induction is provided.
Advises professional, ancillary staff and patients on the nursing care for individual patients, either with an infection or at risk of developing an infection. (e.g Isolation techniques and precautions)
Investigates outbreaks of hospital infection, with particular reference to their source and mode of transmission, and reports back to the Infection Control team and advises on relevant measures for control
Visits wards and departments within the Trust hospitals to audit, evaluate the uptake control of infections measures.
Explains laboratory reports relevant to control of infection to hospital staff and relates clinical information to laboratory staff.
Assists, with particular reference to specialist infection control advice, in the development of standards and guidelines for optimal nursing and medical care.
Supervises other members of the Infection Control team with the preparation of reports on Nosocomial outbreaks of infection.
Partakes in the Infection Control on-call rota

Assists in the programmes of education and training for all grades and disciplines of staff, both formally and informally, in clinical areas
Participates in clinical supervision for registered nurses
Advises patients and members of the general public on issues pertaining to Infection Prevention and Control
Advises on general and specialised cleaning and decontamination techniques and associated issues.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Undertakes evaluation of new equipment and techniques that pertain to Infection Control
Participates in departmental research projects and utilises available research of Infection Control and selected aspects of general nursing which is compatible with, and advances the aims of the Infection Control team
Pursues a programme of continuous education in line with the Trust and current NMC requirements.
Updates professional knowledge through the attendance at meetings of specialist professional associations and relevant conferences.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Collects relevant clinical data for use by the Infection control and assisting with maintenance of records and statistics on hospital acquired infections
Assists with the establishment and revision of policies relating to infection control with other members of the Infection control team.
To undertake any other duties which may be designated by the Lead Nurse.
Assume responsibility for delegated projects throughout the Trust
