Are you looking for a new career opportunity to develop your leadership and skills in oncology?

Due to maternity leave an exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time, Fixed Term or Secondment Band 7 post to provide dietetic clinical leadership for oncology services within the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As an Advanced Clinical Specialist (ACS) Dietitian, you will work closely with dietetic and multi-professional colleagues across the Trust, to ensure that high quality dietetic care is provided for all patients within this specialty

Not only is this an excellent opportunity to expand your clinical knowledge within oncology, it is a chance to further expand your skills across each of the Four Pillars of Practice. There will be opportunities to engage in research and to lead clinical transformation and improvement projects, as well as support the learning and development of other dietitians and multi-professional colleagues.

You will join a friendly team of over 30 dietitians who are currently based across 2 sites. You will be primarily based at York Hospital and will be required to travel to Scarborough and other Trust localities on a regular basis. We have also recently appointed two First Contact Dietitians for two local Primary Care Networks and are working towards building a community dietetic service, so it is truly an exciting time to join us.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a supportive senior dietetic leadership team, including other ACS Dietitians and a Dietetic Team Manager, as well as Dietetic Professional Lead and Senior Operational Manager.

You will provide clinical leadership for a team that can include registered dietitians, assistant practitioners and dietetic support workers. Excellent team working, and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work autonomously.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate strong communication and leadership capabilities. You need to be resilient and able to manage and prioritise your clinical caseload whilst supporting the work and development of the team.

The wider dietetic department provide clinical inpatient and outpatients services to a variety of specialities, including Gastroenterology, Surgery, Critical Care, Oncology, Renal, Paediatrics and Diabetes. The department is well established in facilitating the training of dietetic students and staff are involved in delivering a variety of rolling training programmes for other health care professionals across the Trust.

The Trust has also just launched a new multi-professional preceptorship programme for new registrants including dietitians, as we are committed to developing and supporting our workforce from the outset.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications


  • HCPC Registered Dietitian
  • Evidence of relevant CPD activities
  • Post graduate qualification relevant to post
  • Evidence of significant post graduate training within specialist area


  • Practice placement supervisor qualification

Experience and Knowledge


  • Experience in specialist role, including the management of a range of specialist conditions, with substantial evidence of additional knowledge acquired through formal and informal clinical supervision
  • Evidence of ability to lead and act as an authority on the management of complex clinical presentations in specialist area
  • Substantial experience of assessment and provision of specialist equipment
  • In-depth understanding of current issues in health care Standards of Professional Practice
  • Significant experience of delivering clinical treatment within specialist area


  • Highly experienced in the identification and use of outcome measures to evaluate clinical treatment
  • Highly developed specialist clinical skills within relevant area
  • Significant experience of training/supporting others (including students) within specialist clinical area
  • Evidence of having led the delivery of relevant audit/research projects

Skills and Attributes


  • Highly proficient organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Evidence of ability to lead engagement activities with others and understanding of the importance of good communication when implementing change
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams acting as an advocate for dietetics and authority in relevant specialist area
