Job summary

Are you an experienced staff nurse or already a trained SSP? Are you looking for a new challenge and development opportunities? If so, we are currently looking for an additional team member to join our established group of Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs). The SSP team are nurse practitioners who have the responsibility to ensure all patients who are eligible for Bowel Cancer screening, have a seamless journey through the bowel screening pathway. This is an ideal opportunity to develop and challenge yourself to learn new skills and be part of a national screening programme.

Main duties of the job

SSPs are responsible for supporting the patient throughout their screening pathway - from initial assessment clinics, working in the endoscopy room when the patient attends their procedure, and managing the interpretation, documentation, and giving of results. Liaising with members of the MDT, working across Kettering and Northampton General Hospitals, and participating in Health promotion events and audits.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Provide advice, information, and support for those contacting the screening centre.
  • Perform suitability assessments for colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations
  • Working within set timeframes to refer for colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations.
  • Liaise with clinicians and other specialist services to support patients with complex health needs.
  • Followestablished MDT pathways to ensure timely referral and transfer of patients.
  • Record information and maintain the BCSP local database.
  • Participate in ongoing data collection and quality assurance, service feedback and audit.
  • Provide psychological support to patients and carers when breaking bad news.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and organisations to ensure patient needs are met, e.g., anti-coag, radiology, and pathology services.
  • Be flexible in working patterns to ensure service needs are being met.
  • Travel between screening sites to cover service provision.
  • Work autonomously when required and manage own patient caseload.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure seamless provision of care.
  • To maintain professional competence and support of other staff within the BCSP
  • Impart specialist, expert knowledge to colleagues, patients and carers/relatives


Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Two year post-registration


Desirable

  • Evidence of Diploma/Degree level training


Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to work under pressure/prioritise workload


Desirable

  • Endoscopy Experience
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues relating to Bowel Cancer Screening

  • Evidence of competent IT Skills
