South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is looking to recruit a Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Psychiatry for the Tony Hillis Unit (THU). THU are a 15-bedded high dependency rehabilitation unit for men aged 18-65 within Lambeth Hospital. THU is within the South London Partnership Complex Care Pathway (SLP CCP), who are the responsible commissioner for all NHS rehabilitation beds. THU provide a comprehensive service for individuals with complex treatment resistant psychosis, complicated by challenging behaviours, including violence, absconsion, dual diagnosis, poor engagement and physical co-morbidity. The expected length of stay is 6 to 12 months.

The service involves the service users and their carers in the planning, implementation and evaluation of their care within the constraints of the Mental Health Act. It enables service users to accept personal responsibility, self-determination and as much choice as possible. It also provides carers and relatives with appropriate information and support to enable them to continue to support the service user and maintain their relationship.

As part of the Trust-wide large-scale decant move programme, THUwill be relocated to Ladywell Unit in Lewisham in the early autumn of 2023. Reciprocal cross-cover for Approved Clinician responsibilities and on-call duties will be re-arranged locally upon relocation.

Main duties of the job

The main clinical duties are to provide senior medical input as consultant psychiatrist / Approved Clinician for the patients treated in the THU, and to be part of the joint senior leadership for the Unit. There is reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lambeth during working hours.

It is expected that patients are under a treatment section of the MHA upon admission due to the nature of the ward (high dependency with a focus on challenging behaviour and needs). Patients who may meet the criteria as patients with challenging behaviour who may include forensic patients detained under Section 37 of the MHA.

The post holder will closely work with the senior leadership team of the SLP CCP, home teams of the patients and commissioners.

The post holder will provide out-of-hour senior medical input as per the Lambeth consultant on-call rota (1:24) with a category 'B' 1% banding supplement.

As for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, one full-time CT and part-time ST are placed in the team the post holder will be the Clinical Supervisor for the CT the ST is being supervised by the consultant for the other half of their placement. There are year 3 medical students of King's College London allocated to the team for their longitudinal placements.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • CCT in Rehabilitation Psychiatry or dual CCT in Rehabilitation and General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent within 6 months
  • Section 12(2) approved
  • Approved Clinician status within 3 months upon appointment


Desirable

  • MRCPsyc/FRCPsych or equivalent
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice


Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Wide-ranging knowledge and clinical expertise in bio-psycho-social assessment, treatment and management of patients with the complex mental health conditions in inpatient psychiatry settings
  • Evidence of excellent knowledge and experience in rehabilitation psychiatry and complex care pathways
  • Significant experience in risk assessment and management including positive risk taking


Desirable

  • Specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience of work in different cultural contexts


Academic skills

Essential

  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes


Desirable

  • Formal training or qualification in medical education
  • Experience of teaching a multidisciplinary team
  • Has led quality improvement projects leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients


Personal quality

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others in MDT


Desirable

  • Experience of multi-agency collaboration
