Job summary

This post offers you the chance to develop specialist skills in paediatric respiratory medicine/ Cystic fibrosis patients. The post is based in our dynamic department at the central London Royal Brompton site (Chelsea) of Guys and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be supported by strong working relationships within the paediatric multidisciplinary team. The post is suitable for someone who has experience in paediatrics and/or cystic fibrosis and respiratory dietetics. Experienced Band 6 and part-time working will be considered.

The post holder will have the opportunity to participate in national and international cystic fibrosis events and develop specialist skills in paediatric intensive care. Due to the strong commitment to evidence-based practice throughout the Trust, CPD will be well-supported, and involvement in audit, research and policy development is encouraged and facilitated.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a specialist dietetic service to paediatric respiratory patients, the majority patients with cystic fibrosis or complex respiratory disease. The post holder will attend relevant ward rounds and psycho-social meetings. They will attend regular paediatric respiratory outpatient clinics and cystic fibrosis outreach clinics in addition to their inpatient caseload.

There is also a training remit, for both staff and patients on site and external lectures. The post-holder will work in conjunction with the paediatric respiratory multi-disciplinary team in preparing and delivering study days for clinical staff who work at district general hospitals who have a shared care remit for paediatric patients with Cystic Fibrosis. There may also be opportunity, as part of the CF multi-disciplinary team to provide expert advice in the form of international outreach clinics and teaching sessions to CF patients, care providers and carers.

Other teaching activities involve informal talks to nurses and medical staff on the wards, participation in student training and student study days and other courses run by the Department or Hospital.

Job responsibilities

Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)
    • To provide a dietetic clinical service to designated paediatrics and outpatients referred to the team, in accordance with Departmental Policy and Standards.
    • Work autonomously to provide specialist expert advice and treatment plans to paediatric patients, their carers and clinicians. This will involve nutritional diagnosis (interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition and dietary intake information) the development of treatment plans (frequently including complexities surrounding calculation of nutritional requirements, development of patient centred goals and considering medical, physical, social and psychological needs.) The prescription of dietary treatments and ACBS products for conditions where there maybe limited clinical guidelines.
    • To provide highly complex nutritional counselling to carers of paediatric patients where long-term feeding issues relate to their chronic disease.
    • This work often involves complex cases where many factors such as the use of non-invasive ventilation and presence of a secondary diagnosis (diabetes, liver disease, osteoporosis, and other gastrointestinal disorders) requires expert knowledge and experience.
    • Specialist advice within Cystic Fibrosis including the adjustment of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy dose and according to physical symptoms and biochemical tests.
    • To assess and ensure the nutritional adequacy of the diets of the paediatric patients where medical treatment has compromised their nutritional intake.
    • To assess and predict the long-term implications of patients treatment upon expected growth potential and advising the medical team on the most appropriate method of nutritional intervention/
    • To provide up to date dietary information, either in the form of diet sheets and by participating in special events, such as study days.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications


  • HCPC Registration
  • BSc Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or MSc Degree in Nutrition with Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics
  • A strong commitment to personal and professional development


  • Member of the British Dietetic Association
  • Student clinical educators course

Experience & Knowledge


  • Postgraduate experience in Respiratory Medicine, including Cystic Fibrosis, and/or experience in Paediatrics.
  • Demonstratable knowledge in dietetic issues in paediatrics.
  • Demonstratable knowledge in working with patients with respiratory conditions.
  • Knowledge of paediatric enteral feeds and specialist infant formulas.
  • Experience of presenting educational talks, QI/audits and at journal club.
  • Evidence of advanced teaching skills
  • Experience of carrying out both self-directed and collaborative audit projects.
  • Evidence of leadership skills.


  • Research experience
  • Experience of teaching and lecturing at national, international and HEI level
  • Desire to develop speciality within respiratory medicine or paediatrics.
