The Forensic Rotation Program is an 18-month program allowing Band 5 RMNs to experienceworking in a range of forensic placements.

Each rotation is bespoke to you. All nurses will choose three settings to gain six month experience in. You can choose from
  • Medium Secure High Dependency Admissions Ward
  • Medium Secure Recovery Unit
  • Low Secure Services.
  • Forensic Outreach Liaison Service
  • Sussex Liaison and Diversion Service (This will need enhanced vetting
  • Forensic Community Services
  • Women's Secure Service Pathway including Medium and Low Secure units.

We recognise that the first year post qualifying can feel overwhelming, so we are committed toproviding a package of both clinical and academic support.

Every nurse has access to Forensic Consultant Nurses, pre-rotation learning objectives, anidentified rotation mentor, monthly peer reflective practice, clinical supervision and a forensicspecific preceptee program. Alongside this all band 5 nurses are supported via the SussexPartnership Preceptee program.

Main duties of the job

To deliver a high standard of evidence based inpatient nursing care in the designated care group in partnership with the team, the service users and where appropriate their family

To act as a primary nurse or lead practitioner in the assessment of needs and organising of care.

To co-ordinate shifts and provide supervision for support workers and students.

To work within a team of nurses and other professionals who are committed to the deliveryof a quality service.

To adopt a flexible approach to hours of duty, in order to meet the needs of the serviceover a 24-hour period.

To take charge of a designated clinical area and deputise as appropriate.

To represent the Ward Manager and/or care team, at appropriate forums and disseminateinformation as required.

To represent the clinical team perspective at multidisciplinary meetings and clinical reviewsof patient care.

To be an active participant in the multi-disciplinary team, formulating care plans andutilising appropriate assessments.

Job responsibilities

To undertake assessments of individuals and their families and carers as appropriateadmitted to inpatient care, including service users presenting with high risk. To developcare plans and discharge plans in collaboration with the service user and their families andcarers.

In conjunction with the multi disciplinary teams, assess and manage risks as identifiedthrough assessment. To regularly review risk factors and work in conjunction with the MDTto modify care plans.

To act as the Primary Nurse for inpatient stay and lead practitioner in community services.

To ensure that clinical practice is evidenced based and consistent with relevant NICEguidelines and Trust policies and procedures.

To provide supervision of junior staff and student nurses where appropriate.

To maintain and contribute to standards of professional care, ethics, policies andprocedures.

Ensure that all clinical records are maintained and that other systems and good practice,such as handovers, occur for all staff to communicate effectively.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current registration (mental health / LD/ Adult) appropriate to the job role


Knowledge/Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of MHA (1983/2007).
  • Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (2005), to include practical knowledge of FACE documentation, DOLS and Best Interest decisions
  • Child and Adult safe guarding procedures
  • Change management, organising and prioritising workloads
  • Demonstrate ability to enhance care through evidence based knowledge
  • Demonstrate professional development relevant to the care group.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess and manage clinical risk
