Job summary

Dorset Breast Screening are looking for an experienced Mammographer to join their team as a Breast Screening Practice Educator. The post holder will provide leadership, expert professional advice and be responsible for the day to day running of the service, as well assupporting work to improve the recruitment, retention and training for the breast imaging workforce and help to address a shortage of mammographers and associate practitioners in the South West.

The purpose of the breast screening practice educator role is to:
  • Provide greater access to high quality training and development within Trusts and in doing so improve retention as staff are able to see there are opportunities to develop and progress.
  • Link clinical education and practice and assist staff in bridging the gaps.
  • Develop evidence-based practice in the Trust working with managers to coach and support staff to develop their practice.
  • Link with Universities, Society of Radiographers and other Practice Educators in the region to enhance the recruitment and education of mammographers in the South West.

Main duties of the job

To be a clinical expert in mammography and breast imaging and to work with staff in clinical practice to promote the acquisition of new skills and knowledge. The post holder will spend a minimum of three days a week in the clinical area supervising the trainees and thereafter utilise any non-clinical time to plan training requirements and theory sessions for trainees.

The post holder will lead and develop education and training for UHD and specifically the Dorset Breast Screening Unit by planning and providing clinical skills training to radiographic staff. There will also be a requirement to promote the profession locally, visiting schools and colleges/ adult social groups in the locality to improve awareness of mammographers/assistant practitioners as a profession. The post holder will be expected to utilise social media, communications and video promotions to raise the awareness of working in the South West breast imaging network.

Person Specification



  • Certificate in Mammography


  • Post graduate or teaching qualification



  • Experience in supervision and training of less experienced radiographers, students and departmental staff
  • Experience of the daily management of staff and/or a defined work area.



  • Drivers licence


  • Knowledge of NBSS standards and targets
