Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 Registered Learning Disability or Mental Health Nurse, with experience of working with people with learning disabilities, mental health issues and a forensic history. We are part of Swansea Bay University Health Board's Mental Health and Learning Disability Delivery Unit.

The successful candidate will be required to work as part of a seven-day service, which includes weekend, nights and bank holidays.

Hafod Y Wennol offers a dynamic and challenging work environment, supporting adults with Learning Disabilities who present with behaviours which can challenge. We aim to provide a high quality, person centred approach based on the Positive Behaviour Support model of care.

The post is open to all nurses currently holding registration with the NMC, including newly qualified staff nurses. We offer a supportive preceptorship program for all newly qualified nurses.

Main duties of the job

Hafod Y Wennol is a 6 bed locked planned assessment and rehabilitation unit. The unit provides multi-disciplinary assessment, intervention and rehabilitation of individuals assessed as ready to step down from low secure and locked rehab environments. Individuals are supported to move to more independent living within their local area.

The team comprises ofa unit manager, two clinical leads, registered nurses and health care support workers. In addition to this the team will work alongside the newly created inpatient multi-disciplinary team including: a Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist, a Behaviour Specialist, an Occupational Therapist, a Speech and Language Therapist, an activities co-ordinator, a communication development officer and is supported by a Clinical Lead Nurse and a Business Manager.

The post holder will promote equality for all service users through anti discriminatory practice, supporting individuals' rights, choices, beliefs and identity and by supporting individuals through effective communication.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a positive attitude to working with people with challenging behaviour and experience of working effectively within a multi-disciplinary environment.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Educated to degree level


Desirable

  • BTEC in Positive Behaviour Support


Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of working in inpatient areas within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Evidence of working with individuals with complex health needs and behaviours which challenge
  • Evidence of working with families and carers


Desirable

  • Clinical experience in Learning Disability or Mental Health Services


Aptitude and abilities

Essential

  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to assess clients and develop and monitor care plans
  • Evidence of presenting skills to demonstrate teaching and assessing
  • Ability to prioritise work amongst competing demands and run a span of duty
