Your role will be to provide nurse support in the department's Patient Recovery Area and Interventional Room where you will assist clinicians in a wide range of radiological procedures, maintaining high quality of care in all areas of work and practice.

Main duties of the job

Working within our department, your main duties will include:
  • Working with patients who will be undergoing a wide variety of Interventional procedures.
  • Being responsible for coordinating and providing complete care to patients and working as a part of the team as well as independently.
  • Working closely with members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To be actively involved in their own development and supporting junior members of the team in their development
  • To strictly adhere to Local and Trust wide Infection Control policy and procedures.
  • Participate in assisting the Radiologists as the Scrub Nurse for a wide variety of procedures.
  • Circulating within the Interventional Room assisting the Radiologist/Scrub Nurse by providing the appropriate equipment. Monitoring and communicating with the patient throughout.
  • Participate in on call duties.

Job responsibilities

Patient Care Responsibilities
  • Acting as a Named Nurse, to maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing.
  • Work alongside radiologist as a circulating nurse or scrub nurse during invasive radiological procedures such as Embolisation, stenting.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care in recovery.
  • Provide education and support for patients, carer and families pre and post interventional procedures.
  • To co-ordinate the patients discharge arrangements in accordance with the RUH Discharge Policy.
  • To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
  • To educate patients and their carer as required where a need has been identified.
  • To provide information which enables patients to make choices about adopting a healthy lifestyle.
  • To complete patient documentation to Trust standard.
  • To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
  • To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols/care pathways.
  • To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication.
  • To ensure patient confidentiality.
  • To be responsible for maintaining pharmacy stock within the department.
  • To ensure procedural trolleys for interventional cases are prepared correctly.
  • To safely administer prescribed medication, conscious sedation and monitor its effects, identify, act upon and reports changes to the Radiologist.
  • To undertake IV cannulation and venepuncture after completion of IV Cannulation and Venepuncture Course.
  • To be proficient in the use of departmental database CRIS for booking, attending and discharging patients.
  • To be proficient in the use of millennium system for the following functions:
  • Booking, admitting, discharging, and transferring patients.
  • Case note tracking.
  • Viewing clinic appointments and making amendments as required.
  • ePMA.
  • CAPMAN

  • Professional Development and Education Responsibilities
    • To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff/student education programmes.
    • To help maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff.
    • To attend Trust induction programmes and mandatory training sessions.
    • To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with NMC requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice.
    • To contribute to annual appraisal and be responsible for own Personal Development Programme.
    • To participate in a programme of clinical supervision.
    • To assist in the development and implementation of nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies.
    • To assist in the training and development of Healthcare assistants and complete training as required.

    Research and Development Responsibilities
    • To assist in promoting nursing practice in line with relevant research.

    To maintain an awareness of evidence-based practice
    • To contribute to research and development programmes within the ward/department.


    Audit, Quality and Risk Management Responsibilities
    • To contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.
    • To maintain awareness of the national, professional and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. Clinical Governance.
    • To uphold quality initiatives that improve customer care and enhance the interface between staff, patients and visitors.
    • To participate in the audit process for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality.
    • To be aware of personal responsibilities in relation to the maintenance of a safe environment and identification of potential risks for all personnel, patients and visitors, taking action as and when required.
    • To be aware of the role of the nurse in handling complaints in accordance with RUH policy.
    • To participate in maintaining a clean environment
    • Identify own training needs, to ensure individual is informed and competent in the use of all equipment provided for use.

    Resource Management Responsibilities
    • To develop and maintain an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.
    • To assist in the assessment and monitoring of staffing requirements and report problems to the appropriate manager.
    • To support the leadership of the Sister/Charge nurse, undertaking deputising duties when required.

    Qualifications & Training

    Essential

    • Registered Nurse with Nursing & Midwifery Council


    Knowledge & Experience

    Essential

    • Up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice at the level of a newly qualified nurse.
    • Understanding of equality & diversity and how to apply it to self and others.
    • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for own practice & behaviour.
    • Able to demonstrate effective consolidation of nursing Knowledge & practice after qualification & preceptorship


    Specific Skills

    Essential

    • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate.
    • Demonstrates awareness of importance of working as part of a team.
    • Demonstrates effective nursing Practice in all basic registered nurse procedures.


    Desirable
