Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist Advanced Practitioner to join the CPFT Forensic Psychiatry Service on a full time permanent basis.

The successful candidate will join an experienced and dedicated team of practitioners to promote and implement the role of occupational therapy within the service.

Please note for this role you will be required to travel independently around the county meeting strict time deadlines. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence* and have use of a vehicle. You cannot usepublic transport for this role as this is not a reliable form of transport and will not allow you to meet service needs. Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across both teams to develop and provide an occupational therapy service within the community Forensic service through the provision of occupational therapy assessments and interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation (MoHO) and the principles of recovery.

The post holder will form close links with the Occupational Therapy service at George Mackenzie House (low secure unit), Fulbourn Hospital, to promote a smooth transition from secure services to the community.

The post holder will provide professional leadership for the outreach and community occupational therapy service, ensuring that high quality practice is delivered that produces meaningful and demonstrable outcomes, based on best evidence. This will require collaborative working with all disciplines, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to plan and implement a range of specific Occupational Therapy assessments and therapeutic interventions in both 1:1 and group settings.

• To provide leadership for occupational therapy and other staff delivering occupational therapeutic interventions in the Forensic Psychiatry Service and act as a positive role model around new ways of working and professional relationships.
• To provide operational management & professional leadership for the Forensic Psychiatry occupational therapy service, including responsibility for the clinical and professional governance of occupational therapy across the service.
• To provide specialist advice to professionals and managers, including in relation to professional governance.
• To provide highly specialist occupational therapy assessments, advice and interventions using advanced, clinical reasoning skills.
• To contribute to the setting of quality standards and the delivery of an evaluation of the Forensic Psychiatry occupational therapy roles.
• To provide support, education and professional leadership to non-registered staff and students.
• To promote the expansion of occupational therapy roles and perspectives, and raise awareness of the relationship between occupation and health.
• To provide occupational therapy assessments and interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation and the principles of recovery and enablement.
• To use clinical skills and reasoning to provide interventions to service users with complex needs, working with autonomy and liaising with other advanced practitioner occupational therapists and senior staff when necessary.
• To apply a high level of understanding of the effects of mental and physical health conditions on occupational performance; providing training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptions to the service user's social and physical environment.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

• Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
• Current registration with HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council)
• Undertaken placement educator training or have a willingness to undertake this
• Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

• Additional training / qualifications relevant to working in a forensic mental health/ learning disability
• Member of British Association of Occupational Therapists
• Formal training in Sensory Integration (Level One and above)
• Member of BAOT Mental Health specialist group
• Management/Leadership Qualification

Experience

Essential

• Proven post-professional qualification experience
• Experience of working in a mental health/learning disability setting
• Experience of multidisciplinary working
• Evidence of effective leadership
• Experience of delivering supervision, including other disciplines
• Experience in implementing new projects and an understanding of change principles

Desirable

• Risk assessment in context of forensic client group
• Experience of working in both inpatient and community settings
• Experience of service development work within a forensic setting
• Lived experience of mental health problems

Skills & Abilities

Essential

• Ability to establish therapeutic relationships with service users showing a range of behaviours of concern
• Advanced communication and assertiveness skills including report writing for CPA and ADL reports
• Strong collaborative approach to MDT working
• An interest in and understanding of the fundamental principles of sensory modulation
• Ability to manage own workloads and those of Occupational Therapy colleagues
• Able to carry out a variety of Occupational Therapy assessments and therapeutic programmes including both 1:1 and group interventions relevant to a forensic client group
• Ability to work in a flexible manner and adapt approach according to changing needs of the community caseload
• Ability to research, evaluate, review interventions, and undertake audits

Knowledge & Understanding

Essential

• Knowledge of OT assessment, intervention and practise models relevant to the service user group (e.g. MoHO)
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act legislation relevant to forensic setting
• Knowledge of Occupational Therapy group and 1:1 interventions including evidence based/best practice
• Understands the difference and interface between management and leadership roles
• Knowledge of developments in occupational therapy practice relevant to setting
• Knowledge of role and purpose of operational and professional supervision
• Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and children
• Understanding of the recovery approach
