South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for North Southwark CMHT. This will be split with 4 sessions in Bermondsey, Borough and Rotherhithe CMHT and 4 sessions in Walworth CMHT. These teams are co-located. This post is a fixed term post for 12 months with a view to substantive employment.

In this role, the Consultant Psychiatrist's expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment - supported by trainees and a first-class multidisciplinary team. The Consultant will have a unique opportunity to work with the executive leadership team to develop effective interface between services. This role is for the individual interested in service improvement and development of their leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain, a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.

The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).

The main duties of this 8 PA consultant post are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership and to act as Approved Clinician to the Community Mental Health Teams. The post holder will provide clinical cover for the other Southwark borough consultants and vice versa. The post holder will be employed by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into North Southwark Community Mental Health Team, alongside the team leader.
  • To take consultant responsibility for patients under the care of the CMHT, acting as Approved Clinician and assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe acute mental illness.
  • To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments.
  • To act as a source of support, advice and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals.


Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of eligibility
  • Approved Clinician status AND Approved under S12 of the UK Mental Health Act (1983), or able to achieve these within 3 months of appointment (A)


Desirable

  • Experience in other relevant specialties such as liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management


Organisational and management skills

  • Formal leadership and management training

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals in relevant academic fields
